Early 20th-century abstract nautical scene featuring a docked boat with a bridge and a stucture on a hill in the background. The artist's monogram is faintly visible in the bottom corner.
This image resembles Nielsen's paintings of the Lofoten Islands of Norway completed in 1947 and 1948. The style is consistent with the artist's later move toward bolder brush strokes and stronger color schemes as well as his preference for landscape subjects on smaller canvases.
Nielsen is considered one of the major figures of Danish symbolism and is a recipient of the Eckerberg Medal and the Thorvaldsen Medal. He is known for his large mosaic on Stærekassen in Copenhagen and over 70 of his artworks can be found in museums throughout Denmark.
